Catholic Diocese of Boston is established.

[Oct.-Kane] The diocese includes all of New England. It is one of four dioceses created in the U.S. at the time by Pope Pius VII. The others are New York, Philadelphia, and Bardstown. Boston becomes an archdiocese in 1875.*
